Recompiling didn'y do any good. I tried "regsrv32 nlsxodbc.dll" on a test server installation & got an error. I found a site using google that recommends using
USELSX "NLSXODBC"

rather than the usual USELSX "*LSXODBC". Will try it on Monday.
